What Is a Periodontal Deep Cleaning?

A periodontal deep cleaning also goes by the name “scaling and root planing.” This service goes above and beyond the standard cleaning (called prophylaxis) that you would receive at your general dentist’s office.

A deep cleaning involves two key steps:

  • We scale the teeth in order to remove plaque and bacteria from both above and below the gumline.
  • We use root planing to smooth out the tooth roots so bacteria can no longer cling to them as easily.

We typically treat just one quadrant of the mouth at a time with a deep cleaning, so the process can take a few visits to our office. We prioritize patient comfort and use local anesthesia to make the process as easy as possible.

Am I a Candidate for Deep Cleanings?

Deep cleaning is an effective, non-surgical approach to gum disease treatment. You should visit us for a periodontal evaluation if you are experiencing symptoms of gum disease, which may include:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
  • Red, swollen, and tender gums
  • Noticeable gum recession or pockets between your teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth

After an evaluation, we can determine whether a deep cleaning or another treatment would be the best way to help you manage your condition and improve your oral health.

The Benefits of Deep Cleanings

Some of the top benefits of periodontal deep cleanings involve:

  • Healthier gums: This service can reduce infection below the gumline and support stronger gum tissue around each tooth.
  • Less bleeding: Treatment can calm inflamed tissue, so your gums may bleed less during brushing and flossing.
  • Fresher breath: A deep cleaning removes odor-causing bacteria and tartar that often contribute to persistent bad breath.
  • Shallower periodontal pockets: Smoother root surfaces can help your gums reattach and make harmful buildup less likely.
  • Better tooth support: Early care can slow disease progression and help protect bone and teeth over time.
  • Improved overall health: Gum disease is associated with serious systemic health problems. Addressing it now may reduce your risk of dangerous issues like heart attack, stroke, and even dementia.
