Are you missing one or more permanent teeth, but don’t want to deal with dentures or bridges? Dental implants could be the perfect solution. But before you head off to your dental implant consultation, don’t forget to jot down some questions for your dentist. Here are a few important queries you may want answers to before your dental implant journey begins!
How Successful are Today’s Dental Implants?
If you’ve ever heard anything about dental implants before, you may already be aware that unfortunately sometimes they can fail to successfully integrate with your jawbone. Thankfully, while this is possible, it is very rare. In fact, today’s dental implants have a 95% success rate due to modern placement techniques, better materials, and tried and true aftercare instructions.
If your dentist doesn’t think you’ll be a good candidate for dental implants, he may recommend a preliminary procedure such as a bone graft or sinus lift first. In some cases, however, it may be better to stick to dentures or a dental bridge, especially if he doesn’t think your dental implants would be successful.
What Can I Expect from Dental Implant Surgery Recovery?
Recovering from dental implant surgery will differ from patient to patient but should still follow the same basic stages. Immediately following your procedure you’ll want to rest for one or two days and wait at least 48 hours before eating anything solid. Then, you can gradually add firmer foods to your diet.
The entire surgical healing process can take anywhere from two to six months or more but will largely depend on how well you follow your aftercare instructions, your individual health, and whether you need any preliminary procedures first.
Can I Still Get Dental Implants if I’m a Smoker?
Though it is often still possible to get dental implants if you smoke, vape, or use any type of tobacco product, you must quit at least two weeks prior to your surgery, and try not to resume use again for several months post operative. Be aware that using any type of tobacco product will increase the odds of implant failure, so it is in the best interest of your smile and your overall health that you quit for good.
Are Dental Implants Really Better Than Dentures?
Dental implants are widely considered the gold standard in tooth replacement for myriad reasons. They’re permanent, look and feel natural, provide greater biteforce, prevent jawbone deterioration, and are much easier to clean than dentures. Still, certain patients may be better suited to other types of prosthetics due to their oral health or budget. Your dentist can help you determine which restoration method is best for you by taking these factors into account and can assist you in coming up with a solution that works for your smile!
Remember, getting dental implants is a big decision, and one that you should carefully consider. If you have any questions about any aspect of treatment, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist or dental team!
