When you\u2019re pregnant, your body can go through many changes, including a few inside your mouth. That\u2019s because as your estrogen and progesterone levels increase, so too can inflammation  in your gum tissue. This can cause what is known as pregnancy gingivitis<\/a>, a temporary but risky condition. Here\u2019s what you need to know about it, and how you can manage it if it occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What is Pregnancy Gingivitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pregnancy gingivitis is a condition that develops during pregnancy when the gums may become inflamed due to an increase in pregnancy hormones such as progesterone and estrogen. It can cause symptoms such as bleeding when brushing your teeth, gum redness, swelling, tenderness, and even shininess on the gum surface. This condition can worsen during the second trimester, and may continue until the pregnancy has ended, but the good news is that it should go away on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is Pregnancy Gingivitis Dangerous to My Baby?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, there is no evidence that pregnancy gingivitis can harm your baby or cause miscarriage, though regular, non-pregnancy related gum disease has been linked to lower birth weight. Still, the main concern with pregnancy gingivitis is managing the condition so that it in fact does<\/em> go away following childbirth and that it does not turn into periodontal disease and put your teeth at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treating Pregnancy Gingivitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, pregnancy gingivitis can be easily managed. You may need to see the periodontist more frequently during pregnancy to keep your teeth clean and free of plaque buildup. You should also be sure to maintain excellent oral hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and gargling with a warm saltwater rinse. Should your symptoms become more severe, your periodontist may recommend a prescription mouthwash and\/or oral antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, while pregnancy gingivitis is somewhat common, the good news is that it\u2019s also frequently temporary and by maintaining your oral hygiene and working together with your periodontist, you can easily protect your smile during this incredible stage of life and beyond!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
